Government has commenced the prequalification process for contractors interested in undertaking the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
The Expression of Interest for the prequalification of contractors was published on Friday, September 11, 2026, according to government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
In a Facebook post on Monday, September 14, Kwakye Ofosu said the prequalification exercise will be followed by a contractor selection process expected to last no more than four weeks.
“Expression of Interest for prequalification of contractors for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway was published last Friday, 11th September, 2026. This will be followed by a contractor selection process lasting not more than four weeks. Contract to be awarded before the end of the year.”
The development marks another major step towards the construction of the proposed expressway, with government targeting the award of the contract before the end of 2026.
It follows the completion of the clearance of 175.6 kilometres of the project’s right-of-way by the Ghana Armed Forces. The military engineers completed the exercise in 19 weeks, one week ahead of the 20-week deadline.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is a 198.7-kilometre, six-lane highway being developed under the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme.
The new alignment will connect the Greater Accra, Eastern and Ashanti regions and is expected to improve the movement of people and goods while significantly reducing travel time between Accra and Kumasi.
President John Dramani Mahama has said motorists could potentially complete the journey in about two hours.
Government has also disclosed that $2 billion has been secured in a dedicated account for the project, with the fund expected to reach $4 billion by the end of 2026.
With the prequalification process now underway, government is moving towards the selection of a contractor and the subsequent construction phase of the project.
