The Greater Accra Regional Security Council, REGSEC, has begun demolishing beachfront businesses and other structures at Laboma Beach for allegedly encroaching on the buffer zone of the Kpeshie Lagoon.
The exercise, which began in the early hours of Sunday, September 13, has affected several nightclubs, eateries and hospitality facilities, including the popular Pink Flamingo Lounge.
The demolition follows the expiration of a 21-day notice issued to operators to vacate the protected area.
The exercise forms part of government’s post-flood mitigation measures aimed at clearing structures from waterways and their buffer zones and improving drainage in the Greater Accra Region.
Authorities say the Kpeshie Lagoon and surrounding areas have come under increasing pressure from development, raising concerns about flooding and the obstruction of natural drainage channels.
The 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces is leading the demolition exercise.
Commanding Officer of the Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Frank Osei Amponsah, says the operation is being undertaken under the Post-Flood Mitigation Task Force established following the floods recorded in June and July.
The exercise is expected to continue as authorities clear other structures identified as occupying the protected zone.
