President John Mahama is set to meet with key security, aviation, and port-sector agencies on Thursday, September 17, 2026, as the government moves to review Ghana’s border-control systems and strengthen efforts against narcotics trafficking.
The meeting, to be held at Jubilee House, follows the seizure by French customs officials of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine in a container shipped from Ghana.
The consignment, which was intercepted by French authorities, is estimated to have a street value of about US$260 million.
An invitation issued by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, on Monday, September 14, said the discussions would focus on identifying weaknesses in Ghana’s existing border-control arrangements and developing practical measures to prevent the movement of narcotic drugs and other illicit substances through the country.
The participating institutions have been asked to attend at the highest level, with each institution expected to be represented by its head and no more than one relevant technical officer.
They have also been tasked to present brief assessments of security vulnerabilities within their respective areas of responsibility and outline measures for strengthening intelligence sharing, surveillance, screening, and joint enforcement operations.
The presidential meeting comes amid renewed scrutiny of Ghana’s handling of major international drug-trafficking cases.
It is expected to bring together institutions involved in Ghana’s ports, maritime security, border management, intelligence, law enforcement, and aviation sectors.
They include the Ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs; the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority; Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority; Ghana Shippers’ Authority; terminal scanner operators; Ghana Link Network Services Ltd; the Ghana Maritime Authority; Ghana Navy; Meridian Port Services Ltd; National Intelligence Bureau; the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service and Interpol; the Narcotics Control Commission; and Ghana Airports Company Limited.
