President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that $2 billion is currently available in a dedicated account to finance the commencement of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project.
According to government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President made the disclosure on Monday, September 14, 2026, during the formal handover of the cleared right-of-way for the project at Ejisu-Kwaso in the Ashanti Region.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said President Mahama expects the amount in the account to double by the end of the year, providing the full financing required for the project.
“President Mahama says there is currently $2 billion in a special account for the commencement of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
“By close of year, there will be $4 billion in the account to fully finance the project.”
The disclosure comes as the government moves the project into its next phase following the completion of the clearance of the right-of-way.
The Ghana Armed Forces has cleared about 175.6 kilometres of the corridor in 19 weeks, one week ahead of the original 20-week schedule.
The proposed six-lane expressway is expected to improve connectivity between Accra, the Eastern Region and Kumasi, while reducing congestion and travel time and supporting the movement of goods and people.
The project forms part of the government’s flagship Big Push infrastructure programme.
