Government is undertaking major reforms to Ghana’s 5G framework to promote competition, attract fresh investment and accelerate the rollout of high-speed connectivity across the country.
This was disclosed by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, at the Government Accountability Series held at Jubilee House on Monday, September 7.
According to the Minister, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has removed the wholesale 5G exclusivity framework that previously limited competition in the sector.
He said the move forms part of government’s broader efforts to create a more competitive telecommunications market and make 5G services more accessible to Ghanaians.
Following the removal of the exclusivity arrangement, the NCA has issued Requests for Applications for spectrum in the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz and 3 GHz bands.
The Minister said the availability of spectrum in these bands is expected to open up opportunities for additional investment and participation in Ghana’s 5G market.
Sam George said the reforms were already attracting significant investment, citing MTN Ghana’s commitment to invest more than US$1.1 billion over the next three years.
The investment, he explained, would support the expansion of network coverage, the deployment of new sites and the continued rollout of 5G services.
He said the government was focused on creating the conditions necessary for telecommunications operators to invest and expand their networks while ensuring that consumers benefit from improved connectivity.
The Minister further assured the public that the assignment of 5G spectrum would be completed before the end of 2026, clearing the way for wider deployment of the technology.
The government’s reforms are expected to increase competition within the telecommunications sector, encourage investment and support the expansion of high-speed internet connectivity across Ghana.
