The Ghana Police Service has arrested three persons suspected to be part of a robbery gang linked to a number of armed robbery incidents in parts of the Northern and Savannah regions.
The suspects have been identified as Yacouba Oumar, Abdul Alhassan Kudus, and Abdul Rahman Haruna, alias Saaga.
According to the police, the gang is believed to have operated with two AK-47 assault rifles and a pump-action gun and carried out robberies along the Fumbisi-Yagaba road.
The suspects are also alleged to have sold stolen motorbikes to contacts in Tamale and Savelugu.
The police further linked the suspects to the robbery and killing of a mobile money vendor at Fofulso, near the Damango Junction, earlier in 2026.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, September 7, 2026, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the three suspects were in custody assisting with investigations.
He said the police were pursuing other members of the alleged gang and working to recover the weapons believed to have been used in the crimes.
The IGP also disclosed that investigations into the robbery at the Buipe Cattle Market had led them to suspect Alhaji Imoro Beliko, also known as Alhaji Yacouba, Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, aged 60, as the alleged mastermind.
The police said Beliko, who was a trader at the market, allegedly recruited armed robbers and supplied them with weapons to target traders and other persons carrying large sums of money to the Buipe market.
The development follows the June 29, 2026, robbery at the Buipe Cattle Market, where two mobile money vendors were attacked by armed men. The robbers reportedly made away with GH¢430,000.
According to the IGP, initial investigations into the incident resulted in the arrest of Yacouba Oumar, 28, with the police recovering a pump-action gun, five live BB cartridges, and a single-barrel gun allegedly connected to the robbery.
The IGP said a Police Intelligence Directorate team received information on September 5 about the whereabouts of Alhaji Imoro Beliko and subsequently deployed to the Cattle Market area, where the suspect was placed under surveillance.
He added that Beliko attempted to escape when officers moved to arrest him. He sustained gunshot wounds during the operation and later died.
