The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has facilitated the return of 4,972 Ghanaians from different countries since 2025, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed.
The repatriations involved Ghanaians who were stranded or otherwise found themselves in difficult circumstances abroad, with the Ministry working through Ghanaian diplomatic missions and international partners to bring them home.
Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, September 7, 2026, Mr. Ablakwa said the recent evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa formed part of a broader series of interventions undertaken by the government.
He said the total number comprises 3,807 Ghanaians repatriated from Libya, 440 from Côte d’Ivoire, and 246 from Nigeria.
The Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria cases included Ghanaians affected by QNET-related issues, while those returned from Côte d’Ivoire also included victims of demolition exercises.
A further 244 Ghanaians were repatriated from Cambodia, with 201 returning from Algeria.
The remaining cases involved 18 Ghanaians from Kuwait, eight from Sierra Leone, five from Mauritius, two from Morocco, and one from Iraq.
According to Ablakwa, the frequency of such operations has placed considerable financial and logistical demands on the state.
He said this has strengthened the case for establishing a Ghanaian Diaspora Consular Fund, which would serve as a dedicated source of emergency financing for Ghanaians facing distress outside the country.
The proposed fund, he explained, would allow the government to mobilize resources more quickly and respond to emergencies involving Ghanaian nationals abroad.
According to the minister, the initiative would also support efforts to protect the rights, dignity, and welfare of Ghanaians living or travelling outside the country.
