The Ghana Institute of Governance and Security (GIGS) has commended the Ghana Armed Forces for the steady progress on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway and called for the military to be given continued responsibility for the project through to completion.
The Institute said the visible progress on the road corridor and associated bridges demonstrated the capacity, discipline and commitment of the military engineering units working on the project.
The commendation follows a working visit by the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, and the Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwakye Gbetanu, to inspect ongoing works on the expressway.
In a statement date September 4, 2026 and signed by its Executive Director, Dr David Agbee, GIGS urged the Ghana Armed Forces to sustain the current pace of construction and ensure that work proceeds seamlessly into the asphalting phase.
It also called on the government to mobilise the machinery, equipment and financial resources required to prevent interruptions and enable the military to complete the project within the expected timeline and to the required standard.
The Institute commended President John Dramani Mahama and his government for the vision behind the expressway project, describing it as a significant intervention in addressing one of Ghana’s critical infrastructure needs.
According to GIGS, the progress recorded so far reflects strong leadership and a commitment to delivering infrastructure that serves the national interest.
GIGS seeks full military responsibility
GIGS further urged the government to consider entrusting the Ghana Armed Forces with full responsibility for the construction and supervision of the entire expressway corridor.
It argued that maintaining military-led execution could promote speed, discipline and effective coordination while ensuring continuity across the remaining phases of the project.
The Institute also called for formal recognition of the officers and engineering personnel driving the works, saying their efforts had contributed significantly to the progress recorded.
GIGS reaffirmed its support for strategic national infrastructure projects and said it would continue to monitor developments on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
