At least 30 people have been killed after a large mound of rubbish collapsed onto homes at a major landfill site in Guinea’s capital, Conakry.
The government says another 22 people were injured, including six who are in serious condition.
The collapse occurred at about 2:00 a.m. local time in the Dar-es-Salam area after heavy overnight rain.
Military personnel and other emergency teams have been deployed to search for survivors, with excavators being used to clear the huge pile of waste.
Authorities fear the death toll could rise as several people are believed to remain trapped beneath the debris.
One woman told local media that all five of her children were killed in the disaster.
Guinea’s Prime Minister, Mamadou Oury Bah, visited the scene to assess the situation and oversee rescue operations.
A neighbourhood leader said 18 bodies had initially been recovered and taken to a morgue.
The landfill has a history of deadly collapses. A similar incident at the site in 2017 killed 10 people.
