The death toll from Monday’s deadly road traffic collision at Birimso Bridge near Asiakwa jumction on the Accra-Kumasi Highway in the Eastern Region has risen to three following the death of an 11-year-old girl who sustained critical injuries in the crash.
The Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), DOIII Ohemeng Aaron Adu confirmed the latest development in an update on Tuesday.
According to him, the child was among the occupants of the KIA Sorento with registration number GT 8601-14 and died while receiving treatment at Hawa Memorial Hospital at Osiem.
“Unfortunately, the news reaching us is that the 11-year-old girl, who was part of the KIA Sorento, sadly passed away yesterday. Initially, we had confirmed two fatalities, who were the occupants of the fuel tanker. With this latest development, the number of deaths has increased to three,” she said.
DOIII Aaron Adu disclosed that seven people were initially injured in the crash, comprising two females and five males. The victims were transported to the Kyebi Government Hospital and Hawa Memorial Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
The first two fatalities were the occupants of the fuel tanker, which plunged into a ditch and caught fire after the collision.
The victims were burnt beyond recognition.
The Ghana National Fire Service said it remains on standby at the scene and assured the public that further updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
The fatal collision, which occurred on Monday, involved a fuel tanker, an STC passenger bus, a Mitsubishi Pick-Up with registration number GE-8602-17, and a KIA Sorento with registration GT-8601-14.
The impact of the crash sparked a massive fire that completely consumed the fuel tanker, the STC bus and the Mitsubishi Pick-Up, reducing them to charred wreckage. The KIA Sorento also sustained extensive damage.
The horrific blaze left two people dead, while five others—comprising two women and three men—suffered varying degrees of injuries. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released.
