France midfielder Michael Olise has set a new FIFA World Cup record after registering seven assists during the 2026 tournament, surpassing Pelé’s long-standing mark of six set at the 1970 World Cup.
The Bayern Munich playmaker played a key role in France’s run to the semi-finals, consistently creating scoring opportunities and establishing a productive partnership with captain Kylian Mbappé.
Two of Olise’s assists came for Mbappé, helping the forward finish as the tournament’s top scorer and Golden Boot winner.
Despite France missing out on the final after a 2-0 defeat to eventual champions Spain and later losing 6-4 to England in the third-place playoff, Olise’s creative displays earned widespread praise.
The 24-year-old finished the tournament without scoring despite taking 20 shots, but his vision, passing range and chance creation made him one of the standout performers of the competition.
Olise’s seven assists broke a record that had stood for 56 years since Brazilian legend Pelé recorded six assists during Brazil’s victorious 1970 World Cup campaign.
With the new milestone, Olise has also moved closer to Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup assists record and could challenge it at the 2030 tournament.
The record-breaking campaign further cements Olise’s status as one of football’s brightest creative talents heading into the new club season with Bayern Munich.
