Ghana has secured the lifting of restrictions on egg exports to Burkina Faso following high-level bilateral talks aimed at strengthening trade between the two neighbouring countries.
The breakthrough was achieved after a meeting in Burkina Faso led by the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, on Friday, July 17.
Government said the agreement also clears the way for the resumption of tomato imports from Burkina Faso, restoring an important trade route for businesses in both countries.
The restrictions on Ghanaian eggs, particularly those originating from Dormaa, were imposed by Burkinabe authorities as a precautionary measure over quality concerns.
In a statement, the government assured traders that the discussions had yielded tangible results.
“The engagement has produced concrete, positive outcomes and the Government of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama remains fully committed to protecting the interests of Ghanaian traders and producers.”
To prevent future disruptions, Ghana and Burkina Faso have agreed to establish a Joint Technical Committee to promptly resolve trade-related issues as they arise.
The two countries also agreed to work towards a Bilateral Trade Agreement to deepen economic cooperation, reduce trade barriers and improve market access for goods and services.
Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare further informed Burkinabe authorities that Ghana will participate in this year’s International Arts and Crafts Trade Fair (SIAO) with a high-level delegation showcasing Made-in-Ghana products and services.
The Burkina Faso trade corridor remains one of Ghana’s fastest-growing export markets, with exports rising from US$573 million in 2024 to US$637 million in 2025.
Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring uninterrupted trade and strengthening economic ties for the benefit of traders, producers and consumers in the two countries.
