Ghana’s justice system needs more than judges to be effective- Barker-Vormawor

Private legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has argued that improving Ghana’s justice system requires broader reforms beyond the appointment and work of judges.

According to him, greater attention must be given to supporting other key actors within the justice system, including jurors and judicial officers, whose contributions he says are essential to the effective administration of justice.

In a post on X on Saturday, July 18, Mr. Barker-Vormawor expressed support for the jury system and called for its expansion to cover more cases, arguing that ordinary citizens can make valuable contributions to judicial decision-making.

“I love the jury system. So I wish we could expand on that for many other cases,” he wrote.

However, he raised concerns about the conditions under which jurors perform their duties, describing their compensation and treatment as inadequate.

He said jurors should be treated with respect and appreciation, noting that they are citizens serving an important role in the justice process.

“They are humans oo. Not our slaves. But when you see how jurors are spoken to, it will annoy you,” he stated.

Beyond the jury system, Barker-Vormawor highlighted what he described as challenges facing judicial officers and other workers within Ghana’s courts.

He argued that many people working in the judiciary are among the most underpaid public sector employees and may struggle to afford legal representation if they personally encounter legal challenges.

He compared the situation to a medical professional being unable to access healthcare when they fall ill.

The private legal practitioner maintained that strengthening Ghana’s justice system requires investment in the welfare, capacity, and working conditions of the people responsible for running it.

“Our justice system can work better if we support those who run the system,” he added.
