The constitution is clear enough- Mahama dismisses third-term speculations.

President John Dramani Mahama has maintained that the constitutional provision on presidential term limits is straightforward, despite a case before the Supreme Court seeking clarification on its interpretation.

Speaking during his ‘Resetting Ghana Tour’ in the Volta Region on July 17, Mahama said he does not believe the relevant section of the 1992 Constitution is ambiguous, although he acknowledged the right of any citizen to seek the court’s interpretation.

“If you ask my personal opinion, I thought that it was clear enough. I have read it over several times. It’s exactly what it says. But if they want to ask the Supreme Court, that is their business,” he stated.

The President’s reaction comes days after a teacher from Kpandai in the Northern Region filed a writ at the Supreme Court seeking a declaration that a person who has served two separate, non-consecutive terms as president remains eligible to contest the presidency again.

But Mr. Mahama, who resumed office in January 2025 after previously serving as President between 2013 and 2017, said he is rather focused on fulfilling the mandate given to him by Ghanaians.

“I know that the people of Ghana gave me one additional term, and I am going to work to meet the trust that they put in me,” he insisted.

The President disclosed that he consistently reminds members of his administration that time is limited and that they must work with urgency to fulfill the government’s agenda.

“I always tell my ministers, let’s number our days so that we can work harder to meet the promises we made to the Ghanaian people,” he stated.
