12 confirmed dead, 44 others injured in gory Konongo crash.

12 people have been confirmed dead, with 44 others injured, following a three-vehicle collision at Konongo Anglican Basic School in the Ashanti Region.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the fatal accident involved a DAF cargo truck transporting tomatoes, a Tata passenger bus, and an empty fuel tanker.

The GNFS says preliminary investigations indicate that the cargo truck, which was travelling from Kumasi towards Accra, attempted to overtake another vehicle on a slope.

In the process, the driver lost control of the truck, causing it to collide head-on with the Tata passenger bus travelling from Accra towards Bole.

According to the service, the empty fuel tanker subsequently ran into the accident scene but did not significantly contribute to the casualties.

The GNFS says the injured persons, 30 of whom are critical, have been transported to the Asante Akyem Government Hospital as well as the Steward Hospital for treatment.

According to the service, “Emergency response agencies carried out rescue operations, extricated trapped victims, and ensured the scene was secured to facilitate the safe evacuation of casualties and restoration of traffic flow.”
