Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng, has petitioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to institute disciplinary proceedings against the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, over his alleged role in an appeal arising from the Obuasi West Constituency executive elections.
In a petition addressed to the party’s General Secretary, Mr. Kwarteng accused Dr. Ayew Afriyie of misconduct and asked the party to sanction him. The Obuasi West MP also wants the party to overturn the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee’s recommendation on the appeal relating to constituency executive elections.
According to the petition, the Constituency Appeals Committee had upheld the disqualification of Kofi Owusu Ansah, an aspiring Youth Organiser; Joseph Kwabena Bonsu, an aspiring Second Vice Chairman; and Kofi Appianin Ennin, who was seeking to contest for the position of First Vice Chairman.
The committee, however, indicated that it would reconsider its decision if it was established that Mr. Ennin’s independent candidature in the 2024 general election and the support he allegedly received from the two other aspirants resulted from an official decision of the party.
Mr. Kwarteng alleged that Dr. Ayew Afriyie affirmed before the Appeals Committee that Mr. Ennin’s independent parliamentary bid had been authorized by the party.
He further claimed that the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee relied on that assertion in a recommendation dated July 6, 2026, and consequently directed that Mr. Ennin be cleared to contest the position of First Vice Chairman.
According to the petition, the Regional Executive Committee concluded that Mr. Ennin’s independent candidature formed part of a deliberate party strategy to draw votes away from political opponents.
Mr. Kwarteng, however, rejected that claim, describing it as false and damaging to the image of the party.
He has asked the party’s disciplinary committee to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the Effiduase-Asokore MP and impose appropriate sanctions in accordance with the NPP constitution.
He is also seeking the reversal of a decision that cleared Kofi Appianin Ennin to contest the Obuasi West 1st Vice Chairman position and is calling for the reinstatement of the disqualification of Ennin and two other aspirants.
