Ghanaian killed in South Africa xenophobic violence to be repatriated for burial – Foreign Affairs Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that the body of a Ghanaian national killed during recent xenophobic violence in South Africa will be repatriated to Ghana for burial.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that the government is working closely with Ghana’s High Commission in South Africa, the bereaved family and South African authorities to facilitate the return of the deceased.

The minister condemned the killing and reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of Ghanaians living abroad.

According to the Ministry, all necessary diplomatic and consular processes are being expedited to ensure the timely repatriation of the body while providing the affected family with the required support.

Mr. Ablakwa also assured Ghanaians that the government remains actively engaged with South African authorities to seek justice for the victim and to ensure the safety of other Ghanaian nationals residing in the country.

The incident has renewed concerns over recurring xenophobic attacks in South Africa, where foreign nationals have periodically been targeted in violent outbreaks over the years.

The Ministry urged Ghanaians living in South Africa to remain vigilant, comply with local security advisories and maintain regular contact with Ghana’s diplomatic mission for assistance when necessary.

Government says it will continue to monitor developments closely and work with relevant authorities to safeguard the interests of Ghanaian citizens abroad while pursuing accountability for the latest incident.

The repatriation arrangements are expected to be completed after the required legal and administrative procedures are finalised by authorities in both Ghana and South Africa.
