Residents of Brenase and its environs in the Eastern Region have been struggling to access healthcare services for the past few days. The development follows the shutdown of the Brenase Polyclinic after violent clashes between residents of Brenase and Ofoase. The violent dispute which happened on June 9, 2026 according to the police involved the use of machetes and other weapons, resulting in multiple injuries.
“During the period of unrest, movement between the two communities was restricted, preventing residents and market women from freely accessing both towns and the local market.” the police situation report relayed.
At approximately 12:00 PM, some individuals allegedly involved in the conflict arrived at Brenase Polyclinic seeking medical attention. Due to security concerns and ongoing tensions, access to certain areas of the facility was restricted.
Subsequently, a group of individuals forcefully entered the facility and caused damage to hospital property, including the destruction of CCTV cameras, reportedly because the cameras had captured their activities within the facility.
The agitating residents according to the police issued threats to the health workers present.
“During the incident, nurses and other healthcare workers were threatened with cutlasses and other offensive weapons. Staff members feared for their safety, and the incident disrupted healthcare services within the facility.”
This incident resulted in damage to hospital property, compromised staff safety, and interfered with the delivery of healthcare services. The report asked for further investigation and appropriate security measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
According to Accra News Online sources at the health facility following the incident, many staff members expressed fear and anxiety about returning to work, particularly those assigned to night shifts. “The threats made against healthcare workers and the destruction of hospital property have created significant concerns regarding personal safety and security within the facility” a nurse at the facility mentioned.
The incident has negatively affected staff morale and their sense of security while carrying out their professional duties. Many staff members are apprehensive about working during night hours due to fears of a possible recurrence of violence.
They are therefore calling for enhanced security measures and reassurance from the relevant authorities to ensure the safety of healthcare workers and the uninterrupted delivery of healthcare services. Though soldiers and police officers were deployed tension is still high in the area. Â The District Director of health Accra News has gathered had to arrange for transportation for the staff to their various houses. The Polyclinic has remained shut since the incident on the 9th of June, 2026
