Ghana High Commision suspends South Africa evacuation registration after over 1,500 sign up

Ghana’s High Commission in South Africa has temporarily suspended registration for its voluntary evacuation exercise after receiving more than 1,500 applications from Ghanaians living in the country.

In a statement issued on June 1, the mission said the suspension takes effect from Tuesday, June 2, 2026, and is aimed at allowing officials to process and verify the large number of applications already submitted.

According to the High Commission, the pause is necessary to enable proper screening of applicants in collaboration with South Africa’s Home Affairs authorities.

The mission stressed that the evacuation exercise has not ended, assuring applicants that a new registration phase will be announced after the current batch of applications has been reviewed.

It added that the date for reopening registration will be communicated in due course.

The High Commission expressed appreciation to the Ghanaian community in South Africa for their cooperation, describing their patience as essential to the smooth coordination of the evacuation process.

Authorities say the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to support Ghanaians affected by rising tensions and instability in parts of South Africa.
