PSG break Arsenal hearts as European dream slips away into the Budapest night

For another year, the crown of European football belongs to Paris.

Paris Saint-Germain etched their name deeper into Champions League history on Saturday night after defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in a dramatic final in Budapest, successfully defending the title they won last season and becoming the first team since Real Madrid to retain the trophy in the modern Champions League era.

The final at the Puskás Aréna had everything — tension, resilience, controversy and heartbreak. Arsenal struck first through Kai Havertz after just six minutes, sending thousands of Gunners supporters into dreamland and raising hopes that their long wait for a first European crown was finally coming to an end. But PSG, champions of Europe and masters of surviving difficult moments, refused to surrender. Ousmane Dembélé brought the French giants level from the penalty spot in the second half and neither side could find a winner through extra time, forcing the contest into a nerve-shredding shootout.

When the decisive moment arrived, it was Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães who saw his penalty fly over the bar. PSG converted their spot kicks and the holders were champions once again, sparking wild celebrations among the Paris players and supporters. For Arsenal, it was another painful chapter in their European story, coming exactly 20 years after their only previous Champions League final defeat against Barcelona in 2006.

What makes PSG’s triumph even more remarkable is the continuity behind it. Luis Enrique has largely trusted the same core group that delivered the club’s first-ever Champions League title last season. Led by captain Marquinhos and inspired once again by the brilliance of Dembélé, Vitinha, João Neves and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, PSG have transformed from perennial contenders into a genuine European dynasty. The squad that conquered Europe in 2025 returned almost intact and proved that last season was not a miracle but the beginning of an era.

For Arsenal, the pain cuts even deeper because it arrives in what has otherwise been a historic campaign. Mikel Arteta’s men finally ended their long Premier League title drought and were dreaming of completing a famous double. Instead, while they can celebrate domestic glory, the Champions League remains the missing jewel in the club’s collection. The wait for a first European Cup continues, and as PSG lifted the trophy beneath the Budapest lights, Arsenal fans were left watching another dream disappear into the night.
