NAIMOS arrests four armed illegal miners along Ankobra River

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested four armed men involved in illegal mining activities at Dominase in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.

The suspects were arrested during a routine patrol on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, after the task force discovered an active galamsey site along the Ankobra River. According to NAIMOS, the suspects resisted arrest and were armed with pump-action guns and machetes.

The arrested persons have been identified as Alpha Musa, 28; Rahaman Rojer, 29; Laji Bengali, 25; and Mohammed Agana, 25.

Items retrieved from the site included two pump-action guns, 82 cartridges, three machetes, a water pumping machine, and excavator control boards. Two excavators found at the site were also immobilized.

NAIMOS said the illegal mining activities had caused severe environmental destruction and pollution of the Ankobra River.

The suspects have since been handed over to the Esiama District Police for further investigations and prosecution.
