Military officer confirmed dead during counter-terrorism training exercise in Binduri

A military officer has been confirmed dead following a tragic incident during a counter-terrorism training exercise in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region.

The Ghana Armed Forces says the officer died on May 20, 2026, during an exercise aimed at strengthening the operational readiness of troops against emerging security threats.

The deceased has been identified as 218079 Private Adotey of the 6th Infantry Battalion, who served as a physical training instructor.

According to military authorities, the incident occurred during “Exercise Storm Shield,” a counter-terrorism training programme conducted in the Binduri Forest area.

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, confirmed the death and described the incident as a painful loss to the Armed Forces.

He said the exercise was designed to enhance the preparedness of security personnel, particularly in border communities vulnerable to extremist and other security threats.

Major General Gbetanu extended condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as colleagues in the 6th Infantry Battalion, describing the late soldier as a dedicated officer who died in the line of duty.

He further assured that investigations have been launched into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Army Chief reiterated the military’s commitment to national security and maintaining peace across the country despite the setback.
