“We value and cherish all our citizens” — Gov’t announces support package for Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa

The government has announced a support package for Ghanaians being evacuated from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities said the intervention is aimed at supporting affected citizens as they return home and rebuild their lives.

According to the Ministry, returnees will receive a “Welcome Home Financial Package” alongside transportation support to help them travel to their respective destinations across the country.

Government also disclosed that evacuees will benefit from a reintegration allowance and free psychosocial support services due to the emotional and psychological impact of the attacks.

Additionally, affected persons will be enrolled into a special database to connect them with job opportunities and startup support programmes.

The Ministry described the initiative as part of government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaians abroad during times of crisis.

“We value and cherish all our citizens,” the statement noted.

Meanwhile, the first batch of 300 Ghanaians in South Africa is expected to arrive in Ghana through a special chartered flight scheduled for Thursday, May 21.
