The opposition New Patriotic Party (New Patriotic Party) has expressed strong dissatisfaction over what it describes as irregularities in the handling of the bail application involving its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye.
According to the party, the sudden transfer of the case from Criminal Court Two to General Jurisdiction Two in Accra raises questions about the fairness and transparency of the judicial process. The NPP has described the development as “mind-boggling,” suggesting that it may have been intended to frustrate the bail application.
Abronye was remanded into custody by Circuit Court 9 in Accra over allegations of spreading false news. Following the ruling, the NPP filed a motion challenging the court’s decision and subsequently appeared for the hearing of the bail application.
Speaking after the proceedings, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said the party was surprised by the last-minute reassignment of the case, noting that their legal team had initially been informed that the matter had been assigned to Criminal Court Two.
He said the party’s counsel, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, later informed them that the docket had been moved to a different court shortly before the hearing, despite earlier indications of a fixed court assignment. Mr. Kodua Frimpong questioned the explanation that the transfer was due to an administrative error, describing the situation as unusual in a system that is largely electronically managed.
He further stated that although the party disagreed with the development, its legal team proceeded to the General Jurisdiction Court, where the matter was eventually heard.
Concerns were also raised about Abronye’s whereabouts and health condition, as party officials said they did not see him in court during proceedings.
Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed cautioned that the handling of the case should not undermine Ghana’s peace and democratic stability. He argued that the treatment of the NPP regional chairman did not reflect the democratic principles the country upholds, and called for fairness and consistency in law enforcement.
Mr. Mohammed also alleged inconsistencies in the application of law, claiming that members of the NPP have been disproportionately targeted compared to individuals linked to the governing National Democratic Congress (National Democratic Congress). He further criticized the conduct of security and investigative agencies in previous politically sensitive arrests.
The court has adjourned the matter to a later date, with parties expected to return for further hearing.
