“‘I’ve transferred some MCEs to the North because they approved illegal buildings’” — Linda Ocloo

Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo has cautioned officials against approving illegal building developments, warning that sanctions—including transfers—could be imposed on offenders.

Speaking on enforcement efforts, the Minister stressed government’s determination to clamp down on unauthorised structures, particularly in rapidly growing urban areas.

She indicated that officers who flout regulations by approving illegal buildings could face disciplinary measures, including reassignment.

However, her remark suggesting that such officers could be “transferred to the North as punishment” has sparked criticism from sections of the public.

Some commentators have described the statement as inappropriate, questioning the implication that postings to northern Ghana should be viewed as punitive.

The comment has since generated debate online, with calls for clarification and sensitivity in public communication.

Despite the backlash, the Minister’s broader message underscores ongoing efforts by authorities to enforce planning regulations and address the proliferation of illegal structures across the country.
