A 35-year-old woman has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in collaboration with the Bureau of National Investigations for allegedly attempting to traffic a 9-year-old girl out of the country.
The suspect, identified as Regina Mamle Tawiah, was apprehended at Kotoka International Airport in Accra following an intelligence-led operation by the Odumase-Krobo District Police Command, with support from national security operatives.
According to a statement from the Eastern Regional Police Command, the case was reported on April 19, 2026, after the victim’s father alerted authorities that his daughter had gone missing from their home in Agormanya Zongo and failed to return.
Swift investigations by security agencies led to the suspect’s arrest at the airport, where she was allegedly preparing to travel with the child to Kenya.
The victim has since been rescued and reunited with her family.
Police say preliminary findings suggest the suspect intended to transport the child abroad, although further investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The accused was arraigned before the Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court on April 21, 2026, where she pleaded not guilty. She has been remanded into police custody and is expected to reappear on May 5, 2026, for a case management conference.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities involving children to the nearest police station.
