Mahama unveils private funding plan for Ghana fans ahead of 2026 World Cup

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to privately support the travel of Ghanaian fans to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Speaking at the launch of a World Cup fundraising campaign, President Mahama clarified that his administration will not rely on public funds to facilitate supporters’ travel. Instead, the initiative will be driven by private contributions and support from the public sector.

According to him, the approach is aimed at easing the financial burden on the state while still ensuring that Ghanaian supporters are well represented at the global showpiece.

In addition to travel support, President Mahama disclosed that the government is also spearheading efforts to assist local television stations in securing broadcasting rights for the tournament. This move is expected to make the World Cup accessible to millions of Ghanaians who may not be able to travel abroad.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first edition of the tournament to be hosted by three nations and is anticipated to attract a record number of teams and fans from across the globe.
