Mahama promises a SIM re-registration that actually works this time

Sunyani, Ghana — President John Dramani Mahama has defended plans for a fresh SIM card re-registration exercise, acknowledging that the last one left many Ghanaians frustrated and scratching their heads.

From long queues to endless paperwork, citizens are already joking about the new exercise before it even starts. “Do we really have to go through this all over again?” quipped one person. “Last time I spent half a day standing in line and came out more confused than before!”

Speaking during his Resetting Ghana tour in Sunyani on Thursday, March 19, the President admitted the previous exercise caused unnecessary headaches for many and didn’t produce the results anyone was hoping for.

He explained that the problems came down to poor coordination between key agencies, especially the Ministry of Communications and the National Identification Authority. Without everyone working together, linking SIM cards to verified national ID data was a mess.

“If you remember, we had to re-register our SIM cards before, and it was tough. There was a disconnect between the authorities, and honestly, it didn’t really help anyone,” Mahama said.

But here’s the good news: the new SIM re-registration will be fully integrated with the Ghana Card system, making it easier to update your details without long waits at registration centres.

Mahama is promising a smoother, smarter process this time around, aimed at making sure everyone’s SIM card is properly linked and verified—hopefully without giving anyone another headache.
