Gov’t targets 460 rural telephony sites across 47 constituencies by Q2

Government is set to deploy a total of 460 rural telephony sites across 47 constituencies by the end of the second quarter of 2026, as part of efforts to expand connectivity nationwide.

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, disclosed this during a public hearing of the government assurance committee, stressing that the rollout will significantly improve access to network services in underserved areas.

He further disclosed telcos such as Telecel and MTN have committed to deploying over a thousand sites to enhance service delivery. The Ningo-Prampram MP, appealed to the committee to make a case for telephone connectivity to be treated as a national security matter so for adequate funds to be made available for extension of services.

“We are confident that by the end of the second quarter, we would have had them integrated with the telecom companies,” he said.

Mr. George however clarified that deployment does not immediately translate into usability, noting that activation is a separate process.

“Activation will be when you can then finally make a phone call,” he explained.

Providing details of the rollout, he indicated that several constituencies are already benefiting from the project.

“In Kintampo South… we are working in 21 communities. In Awutu Senya West, we are working in eight communities. In Gomwa West, we are working in eight communities.” he stated.

He also highlighted the broader scope of the initiative across the country.

“We’re actually working in over 47 constituencies,” he added.

In total, 421 sites are being deployed directly, with additional locations handled under the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), bringing the total to 460 sites.

The initiative forms part of government’s strategy to bridge the digital divide and improve connectivity in rural Ghana.
