C/R: Couple arrested in Awutu Bontrase over alleged killing of three-day-old baby

A couple in Awutu Bontrase has been arrested for allegedly killing their three-day-old baby boy, with authorities investigating possible links to ritual activities.

According to reports, the newborn’s body was discovered at a refuse dump with his head and left hand severed, prompting residents to alert the police.

Preliminary investigations indicate that 24-year-old Abena Benewa had delivered the baby at home. Residents say a traditional birth attendant informed the mother that the baby had died and preparations were underway for burial.

However, the father, 26-year-old Bright Ashiao, allegedly took custody of the body. Eyewitnesses claim he attempted to bury the child at the same location where the mutilated body was later discovered.

Police officers from Ghana Police Service arrested the couple in Bontrase before transferring them to the Awutu Bereku Police Station for further investigations.

Some residents suspect the killing may be linked to money rituals, although police say those claims have not yet been confirmed.

The Assembly Member for the Bontrase Electoral Area, Prince Larbie, confirmed the incident and expressed concern about what he described as a growing trend of criminal activities among some youth in the community.

Meanwhile, the Awutu Bereku District Police Commander, Edmond Nyamekye, said the suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court soon.

The incident has shocked residents of the community and renewed concerns over child safety and alleged ritual-related crimes in parts of the country.
