Baba Jamal to be sworn in as Ayawaso East MP

Former Ambassador to Nigeria, Baba Jamal is expected to be sworn in today as the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency. The swearing-in ceremony will take place in Parliament of Ghana, where the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, will administer the oath of office.

Mr. Jamal secured the seat after winning the Ayawaso East by-election held on March 3, 2026, representing the National Democratic Congress. Official results show he polled 10,884 votes, defeating the New Patriotic Party candidate Yusif Ali Baba, who secured 4,009 votes. Other candidates, including an independent contender, trailed behind.

The by-election was organised following the death of the constituency’s former MP, Naser Toure Mahama, who passed away in January 2026 after a short illness.

In a message ahead of the swearing-in, Mr. Jamal expressed gratitude to constituents for the mandate to represent them in Parliament, describing the opportunity as humbling and pledging to work with residents to advance development in the constituency.

His swearing-in will officially restore parliamentary representation for the Ayawaso East Constituency following the by-election.
