Poll Shows Majority of Cocoa Farmers Support Price Cuts, Public Opinion Divided

A poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics following the government’s announcement of a reduction in cocoa prices shows that public opinion is divided over the fairness of the new pricing.

The findings come after widespread unrest following the Producer Price Review Committee’s (PPRC) announcement on February 12, 2026, that pegged the new farmgate price at GH¢41,392 per tonne – equivalent to GH¢2,587 per 64-kilogram bag, down from GH¢3,625 in October 2025, a reduction of roughly 28.6%.

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who chairs the PPRC, defended the adjustment, citing a collapse in world cocoa prices.

President John Dramani Mahama also described the reduction as a painful but necessary decision, insisting the move is aimed at rescuing Ghana’s struggling cocoa sector from deeper collapse.

Among all voters surveyed, 44% believe the new prices are fair, 31% say they are unfair, and 26% are neutral.

However, the survey indicates that cocoa farmers themselves largely support the adjustment. 56% of cocoa farmers said the new prices are fair, 11% considered them unfair, and 33% were neutral.

Regional analysis of the poll shows a slim majority of voters in Ahafo, Ashanti, Bono, Greater Accra, Northern, and Western North regions believe the price cuts are unfair. The largest dissatisfaction was recorded in Western North, where 62% of respondents said the prices were unfair.

On party lines, the poll reveals contrasting views: among New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters, 53% believe the price cut is unfair, while 24% consider it fair. Among National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters, 61% view the adjustment as fair, and only 14% see it as unfair. Among floating voters, 42% believe the new prices are fair, and 29% consider them unfair.

The findings highlight a divide between the general public and cocoa farmers, with farmers generally accepting the government’s pricing measures as a necessary step for the sector, while some regions and political demographics express dissatisfaction.
