The Ghana Police Service says officers in the Oti Region have retrieved suspected cannabis with an estimated street value of more than GH¢1.4 million, concealed in cartons of bottled mineral water.

According to a police statement issued in Dambai, a Volvo truck with registration number GC 3522-09 was intercepted at the Bonakye checkpoint on 29 December 2025 while travelling towards Kpassa, following intelligence that it was conveying illegal goods.

Police said the driver and another occupant fled the scene upon interception, abandoning the vehicle with the ignition key still in place.
After months of legal processes, the truck was opened on 24 February 2026 at Nkwanta following a court order from the Jasikan Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Lambert Y. Kerieba.

The search was conducted in the presence of officers from the Police Service, the Military, the National Intelligence Bureau, Defence Intelligence, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Narcotics Control Commission, as well as members of the media.

A detailed inspection uncovered 320 cartons of bottled mineral water used to conceal 91 bales of suspected cannabis. In total, the consignment amounted to 7,173 slabs, with an estimated street value exceeding GH¢1.4 million.

Police confirmed the exhibits have been retained for forensic analysis as investigations continue. Efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the suspects who fled the scene.
The Command has appealed to the public to provide credible information to support efforts to combat the trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs within the region and beyond.
