The Government has approved a structured four-month payment plan to settle outstanding salary arrears owed to nurses and midwives recruited in the 2024/2025 period.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health confirmed that following negotiations with the Ministry of Finance, approval has been granted for the arrears to be paid in four instalments from April to July.
Under the agreed schedule:
April: 2 months
May: 3 months
June: 3 months
July: 3 months
The Ministry described the arrangement as a responsible and structured approach to clearing the outstanding obligations while maintaining fiscal discipline.
Background
Over the past year, several groups of newly posted nurses and midwives raised concerns about delayed salary payments and accumulated arrears after assuming duty. Some affected health workers publicly appealed to government authorities for urgent intervention, citing financial hardship and the strain caused by months without pay.
The issue gained wider attention after representatives of unpaid nurses alleged discrepancies within the public payroll system, claims which were strongly denied by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department. The Department maintained that it had not unlawfully removed any validated arrears from the system.
The latest approval of a phased payment plan is expected to bring relief to affected nurses and midwives and ease tensions within the health sector. The Government has reiterated its commitment to the welfare and motivation of health professionals across the country.
