NPP to Establish Policy Unit Ahead of 2028 Elections

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched a major internal restructuring process, announcing plans to establish a strengthened policy unit as part of efforts to reposition the party for the 2028 general elections.

The announcement was made by the party’s newly elected presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, during a post-election thanksgiving service on February 15, 2026, at the UPSA Auditorium.

Dr. Bawumia said the new policy unit will refine, coordinate and promote the NPP’s alternative policy proposals, while broader organisational reforms will target national, regional, constituency and grassroots structures to rebuild campaign strength.

He noted that although the party’s internal elections were peaceful, they created tensions that require reconciliation. He urged members to embrace unity, forgiveness and accountability as the party begins a new rebuilding phase.

The NPP also plans to embark on a nationwide “thank you tour” to engage grassroots supporters and strengthen internal cohesion.

Positioning the reforms within the broader political landscape, Dr. Bawumia said victory in 2028 would require discipline, humility and sustained grassroots engagement. He described the restructuring and policy overhaul as key to regaining public trust and presenting credible governance alternatives to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He further called for political restraint and national unity, urging the government to avoid intimidation and partisan division.

The thanksgiving service marked both the close of the party’s internal electoral process and the start of what party leaders describe as a policy-driven rebuilding agenda ahead of 2028.
