Accra Metropolitan Assembly Sanitation Court Convicts Eight for Open Defecation in Accra

The AMA Sanitation Court has convicted eight individuals for engaging in open defecation in parts of the capital, as authorities intensify efforts to enforce sanitation by-laws across the city.

The convictions followed a special night-time enforcement exercise by environmental health officers of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in communities including Bubuashie, Jamestown and Chorkor. The operation forms part of a broader campaign to curb unsanitary practices and improve public health standards.

Each offender was fined GH¢600, equivalent to 50 penalty units. Seven of the convicts were remanded into custody after failing to pay the fine, while one individual settled the amount and was discharged by the court.

There was a similar incident in October 2025,where seven people were convicted of open defecation.

City authorities say the crackdown is part of a renewed 24-hour sanitation enforcement strategy aimed at eliminating open defecation and restoring cleanliness in the metropolis. Officials warned that offenders will continue to face prosecution under existing public health regulations.

The AMA reiterated its commitment to ensuring a cleaner Accra, urging residents to make use of available public toilet facilities and adhere strictly to sanitation laws.
