Bawumia wins NPP flagbearer slot with landslide victory

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged victorious in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, securing a decisive mandate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

The former Vice President polled 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of total valid votes cast, defeating four other contenders in a keenly contested race.

His closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes (23.76%), while Dr. Bryan Acheampong followed in third position with 36,303 votes (18.53%).

Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum finished fourth with 1,999 votes (1.02%), and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong placed fifth after polling 402 votes (0.21%).

More than 211,000 delegates participated in the nationwide exercise, which was conducted at 333 polling centres across all 275 constituencies.

Voting took place under tight security, with party officials and independent observers monitoring the process to ensure transparency and credibility.

Early trends from collation centres indicated strong nationwide support for Dr. Bawumia, a development that was later confirmed by the final results.

Party leaders and observers praised the conduct of the polls, describing the exercise as peaceful and orderly, with minimal disruptions recorded.

In his victory speech, Dr. Bawumia expressed profound gratitude to party delegates for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to lead a united and inclusive campaign.

He called on supporters of all aspirants to put aside differences and rally behind the party as it prepares for the 2028 elections.

“I will work tirelessly to bring every member on board as we pursue victory together,” he assured.

The outcome positions Dr. Bawumia as the NPP’s standard-bearer in what is expected to be a highly competitive national contest.
