NPP Flagbearer Hopefuls Sign Peace Pact Ahead of January 31 Primaries

All five flagbearer hopefuls of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have signed a peace pact, committing to a violence-free presidential primary before, during, and after the elections scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The agreement was witnessed by the National Peace Council, the Ghana Police Service, and the NPP’s Council of Elders, among other stakeholders. The pact is aimed at preserving party unity and strengthening the party’s chances of returning to power in the 2028 general elections.

Party leaders and observers have described the move as critical, given the high stakes and intense competition surrounding the flagbearer race.

However, the event was not without controversy. A video that has since gone viral shows former Assin Central MP and flagbearer aspirant, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, raising concerns during the signing process, sparking debate among party supporters and the wider public.

In response, a member of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, defended the aspirant’s actions. He explained that Mr. Agyapong merely sought to further scrutinise the document, claiming it differed from an earlier version that had been circulated to all aspirants.

Meanwhile, another flagbearer hopeful, Kwabena Agyapong, has cautioned that reconciling the party after the primaries may prove challenging. He warned that lingering tensions from the contest could affect party cohesion if not carefully managed.

Political analysts say how the NPP handles the post-primaries period will be crucial, as unity remains a key factor in the party’s preparations for the 2028 general elections.
