Burkina Faso staged a dramatic late comeback to secure a 2-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea in their Africa Cup of Nations Group E opener.
Equatorial Guinea took the lead through Marvin Anieboh’s header in the 85th minute. However, Burkina Faso refused to back down. Georgi Minoungou equalized in the fifth minute of stoppage time, and just three minutes later, Edmond Tapsoba headed home the winner, sending fans into joyous celebrations.
The victory was even more remarkable as Equatorial Guinea had been reduced to 10 men early in the second half after Basilio Ndong was sent off for a reckless challenge on Burkina Faso’s Bertrand Traore. Despite dominating possession, Burkina Faso struggled to break down the resilient Equatorial Guinea defense until their late surge.
