Koforidua High Court throws out Suhum Parliamentary election petition

The Koforidua High Court has dismissed a parliamentary election petition challenging the outcome of the Suhum Constituency election in the Eastern Region, effectively bringing the legal contest to an end.

The petition, filed under the case Kwadjo Asante vrs Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Protozoa) and Others, sought to overturn the results of the parliamentary election conducted in the constituency.

In its ruling, the court struck out the petition, thereby upholding the election results and clearing the way for the respondent to retain the parliamentary seat without any further legal impediments arising from the case.

Details of the court’s reasoning were not immediately available. It also remains unclear whether the petitioner intends to pursue any further legal action following the dismissal.

The ruling represents a significant development in post-election litigation in the Eastern Region, particularly in the Suhum Constituency, where the election results had attracted heightened public interest after the polls.

Speaking after the court’s decision, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Akwapim North Constituency, Sammy Awuku, disclosed that the court awarded costs of GH¢200,000 against the petitioners.

According to him, the respondent initially requested costs of GH¢500,000 but the court, in its discretion, deemed GH¢200,000 appropriate under the circumstances.
