Koforidua, Ghana — The Eastern Regional Hospital has marked a significant milestone in neonatal care by celebrating children born prematurely and successfully managed at the facility over the years. The event formed part of the annual World Prematurity Day activities, highlighting achievements in reducing preterm mortality and providing hope for countless families.
The highlight? A set of quadruplets—two boys and two girls—born in October 2023 weighing between just 1.4kg and 1.9kg, now healthy toddlers bringing joy to their farming family from Owirakese.
This heartwarming event also featured a generous donation of graduation gowns by a mother of twins—symbolizing community spirit and hope.
Once grappling with high preterm mortality rates, the hospital has turned a corner thanks to a cutting-edge GH¢7 million Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), commissioned in 2023 by Nana Owiredu Wadie I, founder of the Kabaka Foundation. The NICU boasts 70 beds across specialized units, including the Kangaroo Mother Care Excellence Unit, and a 30-bed mothers’ hostel, revolutionizing neonatal care in the region.
Dr. Arko Akoto-Ampaw, Medical Director, praised the NICU’s impact and the dedication of staff and families. Nana Owiredu Wadie I pledged continued support to advance Ghana’s health goals and give every baby a fighting chance at life.
This celebration is more than a milestone—it’s a beacon of hope for premature babies and their families across Ghana.
