GES Commits to Advocating for Adequate Resources Amid Criticism of 2025 WASSCE Results

Accra, Ghana — In the wake of widespread criticism over the poor performance in the 2025 WASSCE examinations, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has pledged to intensify its advocacy for increased government support to improve teaching and learning conditions nationwide.

The recent examination results revealed alarming statistics, with over 200,000 candidates failing Social Studies and more than 240,000 failing Mathematics. These outcomes have sparked calls from educational civil society organizations for a comprehensive investigation into the factors behind the disappointing performance.

Speaking on Morning Starr on Starr FM, with host Naa Dedei Tettey, Daniel Fenyi, GES Public Relations Officer, emphasised the need for enhanced resources and support to address the challenges students face. He offered recommendations focused on improving instructional quality and student engagement to ensure better results in future examinations.

Additionally, teachers have pointed to growing indiscipline among students as a contributing factor to the decline in passes. Since the ban on corporal punishment in Ghanaian schools in 2017, disciplinary measures have been limited, leading some educators to express concerns about the impact on academic performance. An anonymous teacher who called into the show lamented the shift towards minimal disciplinary action, suggesting it has curtailed teachers’ ability to maintain classroom order and effectively impart knowledge.

As the nation grapples with these challenges, the Ghana Education Service remains committed to working with stakeholders to create an enabling environment that supports student success and elevates the quality of education in Ghana.
