Everton came away with a sensational 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, despite playing with a numerical disadvantage after Senegalese international, Idrissa Gana Gueye was shown a red card in the 13th minute for slapping teammate Michael Keane, generating a heated altercation between the duo.
The unfortunate incident happened when Keane and got involved in a tangle, which led to Gueye delivering to his teammate right across his face which incurred the wrath of referee Chris Kavanagh to read to his top pocket to brandish a red card to Gueye, leaving his team down to ten men half way through the first stanza. Idrissa Gana Gueye in a modest way took to his social media to render an apology to his teammate Michael Keane the club as well for his unsportsmanlike like behaviour on the field last night.
Despite being a man down and against the run of play Everton evened the odds as they surprisingly shot themselves into a 1-0 lead through Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall who wriggled and jinked his way past, Leno Yoro before sending home a crisp curling strike into the top corner outside the box past goalkeeper San Lammens who helped the ball into the twine with a finger tip dive. It was an unstoppable strike from the former Leicester City and Chelsea player who showed off his final third prowess with a precise finish.
Man United came close to scoring on two occasions frost through Patrick Dorgu who skied his strike wide followed up skipper Bruno Fernandes whose long range strike forced Jordan Pickford to make a super save and keep the score line at 1-0.
Back from recess Ruben Amorim’s boys had a lion share of possession in the second half, but the Toffees remained resolute at the back, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford playing a cult hero role by making several crucial saves to shut Manchester United and prevent them from getting a goal.
Pickford’s heroic paid off at the blast of the final whistle as the lads from Merseyside held on to their own to snatch their first win at Old Trafford in 21 years to climb to 8th in the league standings, tied on same points with Manchester United. And for Pickford it was a super outing at Old Trafford as he was voted the Man of the Match after a super performance.
After hijacking Man United’s glory train right on their turf and sealing off a 1-0 victory against the Red Devils Everton boss, David Moyes was full of admiration for his boys who showed grit and resilience.
•David Moyes(Everton):”We were outstanding. The boys were incredible.
We had a bit of luck with the red card, but we dug deep and got the result.”
Away from that Manchester United coach, Ruben Amorim spoke about the poor performance of his players on the night.
•Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) – “We were poor. We didn’t create enough chances and Everton defended well and as such we need to take responsibility and improve.”
Last night’s victory at Old Trafford was a momentous one as they secured all 3 points.
