The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has apprehended a man caught on camera in a disturbing viral Facebook video physically assaulting a woman believed to be his wife. The incident took place at their residence in Ofankor, within the Ga East Municipality.
The suspect, identified as John Odartey Lamptey, was arrested on Monday, November 17th, 2025, at the family home following the widespread circulation of the shocking footage.
The video, just over a minute long, shows a woman stripped naked and being mercilessly caned by the man inside a residential compound. Despite her desperate pleas, the man ignored her cries. A passerby who stopped briefly in front of the gate was quickly sent away by the assailant, who then shut the gate and resumed the brutal attack.
In an official statement signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer at the CID, it was revealed that two of the suspect’s siblings—Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey—were also arrested for attempting to attack a female tenant suspected of recording and sharing the video.
“The said tenant was rescued to ensure her safety. Efforts are underway to locate and ensure the safety of the wife who had fled the scene before the Police arrived,” the statement confirmed.
The harrowing footage has sparked nationwide outrage, with a terrified tenant capturing the brutal beating in broad daylight right outside the couple’s home. The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has since issued a strong condemnation of the assault, vowing swift action to protect victims of domestic violence.
