Bawumia maintains 63.8% grip on NPP flagbearer contest – APL poll shows

A new nationwide poll conducted by Africa Policy Lens (APL) has revealed that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia remains the overwhelming favourite to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.

According to the findings, Dr. Bawumia leads in 14 out of the 16 regions with 63.8 %, while Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the former Assin Central MP, tops in two regions. The survey also notes that Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi, has made some gains in the Eastern Region.

“If elections were held today, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would emerge as the preferred candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections,” the report stated.

The survey, which covered all 16 regions, engaged 30,631 delegates using a Proportionate Stratified Sampling method. This approach ensured that regions with higher numbers of delegates received proportionally larger samples.

“Our study sampled delegates across all regions, deploying our trained in-house field team,” APL explained. “We have a well-resourced call centre that allows us to validate and revisit any particular interview to ensure accuracy and data integrity.”

The regional breakdown of interviews included: Ashanti (4,909), Greater Accra (5,115), Eastern (2,929), Central (2,704), Western (2,484), Western North (2,443), Volta (2,247), Ahafo (1,108), Bono East (1,089), Upper East (1,091), Northern (1,206), Bono (820), Savannah (740), Upper West (659), North East (649), and Oti (438).

The outcome of this survey reaffirms Dr. Bawumia’s continued dominance within the governing party, even as other aspirants intensify grassroots engagements ahead of the NPP’s next presidential primary.
