Utility Tariffs: Consumers will not pay over 220% increment proposal to PURC- ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana has clarified the recent controversy over its proposed tariff increment of over 220% to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission for approval. The utility service provider has allayed the fears of consumers the proposed increment will not be passed on to them.

According to the acting MD, Julius Kwame Kpekpena, the increment might not necessarily be passed on to the end consumer adding the PURC can increase the distribution service charge which he argues is disproportionate against ECG without necessarily affecting the end-user tariff.

Speaking during a monitoring visit by the Energy Committee of Parliament, the acting MD however further explained the proposed increment is a service charge necessitated by the need to maintain and expand its critical infrastructure.

The PURC has this week announced a 1.14% increment in electricity tariffs effective October 1.
