Kofi Akpaloo released from EOCO custody amid claims of fraud, money laundering

Kofi Akpaloo, leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana, has regained his freedom after spending eight days in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The politician, who was arrested on September 3, 2025, faced allegations of financial misconduct, including fraud, money laundering, mismanagement of public funds, and causing financial loss to the state.

Upon his release on Thursday, September 11, Akpaloo described his arrest as politically motivated, linking it to his recent criticisms of the government.

“They say they are conducting investigations, but it is politics as usual. My arrest and detention were due to my recent utterances about the government,” he told reporters.

Akpaloo had been granted police bail with a GH¢10 million bond and two sureties, but remained in EOCO custody for several days while finalizing the conditions.

A video shared by local media captured him leaving EOCO’s premises in Accra, greeted by family and supporters.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations into the alleged financial crimes are ongoing, with Akpaloo now free to participate in the legal process while fulfilling the bail requirements.
