Former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is taking his campaign to the Ashanti Region today, Wednesday, September 10, 2025, with a renewed call for party unity and a bold vision for Ghana’s future.
Dr. Bawumia, who is widely seen as the frontrunner in the party’s upcoming flagbearer contest, will begin a two-day tour of the Ashanti Region, where he is expected to interact with party executives and former MMDCEs and engage directly with the grassroots.
His itinerary includes visits to the Adansi Asokwa, Akrofoum, Fomena, Obuasi East, Obuasi West, and New Edubiase constituencies. At each stop, he will meet all interest groups and party stakeholders as part of efforts to consolidate support in the region regarded as the party’s stronghold.
Campaign themes
Dr. Bawumia has consistently framed his campaign around the themes of party unity, sacrifice, and preparation for power in 2028.
Speaking after filing his nomination papers earlier, he reminded party faithful of his long-standing service to both the NPP and Ghana:
“All my life, this country and this party have given me so much. I feel an overwhelming sense of duty to give back,” he stated.
He recalled giving up a position at the Bank of Ghana in 2008 and later resigning from the African Development Bank in 2012 to support the NPP’s electoral fortunes. He also pointed to his role as the star witness in the 2013 election petition and his decision to concede defeat in the 2024 elections to preserve national peace.
“That is why I have never hesitated to defend this party, even at the risk of mockery by our opponents. That is why I did not hesitate to concede the 2024 elections to preserve the nation’s peace,” he stressed.
A Prepared candidate
Promising to bring the same level of commitment into his new role, Dr. Bawumia declared
“You can be sure that with Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer, I shall not hesitate to put my all on the line, for the NPP and for Ghana, as I have done before.”
As a four-time running mate, two-term Vice President, and the NPP’s 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. Bawumia says his track record makes him “the most prepared candidate for the NPP, and for President in 2028.”
He has been keen to remind delegates of the interventions he championed in government, ranging from the government’s digitisation agenda to financial inclusion initiatives, which he believes laid the groundwork for a modernised Ghanaian economy.
Vision for Ghana
Addressing party supporters at his nomination, Dr. Bawumia laid out his broader vision for Ghana, centred on economic transformation
“My vision is to expand the Ghanaian economy through rich ideas that provide incentives and measures such as a flat tax system for individual, corporate, and import taxes, and an enabling environment for business to thrive and accelerate the pace of job creation,” he explained.
He added: “My vision is to reduce the cost of living for the average Ghanaian, adopt a constituency-based development and budgeting framework, and build a modern digitalised economy that offers equal opportunities to all, including women, the physically challenged and the grassroots.”
Call for unity
As he storms the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia is expected to reinforce his call for party unity and discipline ahead of the January 31 flagbearer election
“This election is an election not only for flagbearer of our party but also an election for the soul of this party,” he told delegates recently.
“The choice we make on January 31 will determine whether or not this party will hold on to the values that make us great or become a new party focused on deepening the chasm between the rich and the poor.”
Positioning himself as a unifier, he urged the rank and file of the party to: “Join me on this journey to rebuild our party and reposition this great tradition to deliver for Ghanaians from 2028.”
Looking ahead
With the Ashanti Region long regarded as the NPP’s political heartbeat, today’s tour is expected to be a crucial step in solidifying his grassroots support.
Dr. Bawumia insists he has the integrity, competence, compassion, and humility to lead the NPP and ultimately Ghana
“I offer myself to lead the party for the 2028 elections because I have the values not only required to lead this party but also to lead this country,” he said.
As the campaign season gathers momentum, all eyes will be on how delegates in the Ashanti Region respond to his message of unity, sacrifice, and vision.
