Death of 3 Students in Bawku Conflict: GES Explores Safety, Online Learning Options

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is considering a range of measures to ensure the safety and continued education of students in Bawku and surrounding areas, following the closure of at least three Senior High Schools due to escalating violence.

The closures were prompted by the fatal shooting of three students, which led to the evacuation of others as tensions in the area deepened. Health groups, including the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), have since called on government to withdraw health personnel from the region, citing safety concerns.

Final-year students preparing to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) next week remain in uncertainty. Their evacuation has disrupted academic schedules and raised concerns about their ability to participate in the exams.

Public Relations Officer for GES Daniel Fenyi has disclosed to Starr News the Service is urgently exploring ways to protect final-year students while ensuring their access to exams.

“We are brooding over two options. Number one is monitoring the situation to ascertain whether peace will be restored. Then we might consider having the students back on campus to sit the examination. Then we consider alternative examination centers where we could sit the students to write the examinations. We’re doing this in collaborating with WAEC”.

He also revealed that GES is considering rolling out online tutoring options for first- and second-year students who are unable to return to school for now.

The situation remains fluid as authorities continue to monitor security developments in the region.
