Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has reportedly confirmed his intention to contest in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearership race ahead of the 2028 general elections.
According to broadcast journalist Omanhene Kwabena Asante, who made the revelation on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Opoku’s decision has already been finalized.
“This is confirmed. My own fellow Ahafo man, Eric Opoku, will contest. Julius Debrah from the Eastern Region will also contest,” Omanhene stated.
The development hints at an upcoming internal contest within the NDC as the party begins preparations for life after President John Dramani Mahama’s expected second term.
Mr. Opoku joins a tall list of persons with interest of succeeding President Mahama which includes Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, National Chairman for the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson among others.
